Varanasi Silk Panel
India.  57"x 101"

Silk, brocaded with gold and silk.  Late 19th century.  This weaving is made with the same materials, in the same structure as the famous Benaras saris, but is different in its dimensions, layout, and larger than usual field design.  It was most likely made for export to either Indonesia or Thailand/Laos. Indeed, it was found in Indonesia.  It is in excellent condition, with one careful mend. The piece is folded over the pole at the top in these photos..... $1450
