Japanese Uchikake
Late Edo/Early Meiji period, 1860-1870.

Silk wedding kimono with yuzen dyeing, sumi-e painting, and embroidery.  49½"across the shoulders; 60"long.  It is difficult to see the embroidered sections in the photos, but silk satin stitch ornaments many of the floral forms in this piece. Gold threads are couched on the background, and heavy, three-dimensional gold embroidery outlines the rock forms near the hem--a detail typical of Edo period work.  It is a rare garment, in superb condition..... $5800

A white rinzu silk shiromuku was worn for the wedding ceremony and then this uchikake over it  for the wedding reception.  This piece and the shiromuku, K-7721, shown on this website directly following this piece, were acquired as a set. I will sell them either together or individually.
