Japanese Uchikake
Early Meiji period, 1868-80.

Wedding kimono, theater costume, or geisha's kimono of silk satin with gold couching and silk embroidery.  Eagles and waves; five couched mon. This spectacular garment is so unusual, it is difficult to determine its exact use. It is in very good condition, with small frayed areas in the benibana-dyed red chirimen silk crepe lining and padded hem. A few areas of the silk embroidery are abraded.  51"across the shoulders; 72"long.  $6,500   HOLD
