MARLA MALLETT: TEXTILES

Japanese Furisode
Meiji period, 1900-1912.
Chirimen
silk crepe formal kimono with yuzen dyeing and embroidered silk and gold accents. Five crests.  50"across the shoulders; 62"long. The hand-painting continues into the lining, where there is a benibana red silk upper lining. This lovely kimono is in very good condition. With sleeves that are a little longer than are usual for a married woman's tomesode, and with a red lining, this garment may have been a geisha's formal kimono.
Unfortunately the photos don't capture the delicacy of the drawing or the luster of the embroidered accents. Read about yuzen dyeing on the Design Techniques page.    $1200
