Pair of Chinese Buddhist Temple Banners
Tibet. Late 19th century.  Each:  25½"x 46"

Gold, silver, and silk embroidery on silk; metal disc ornaments; gold brocade and fur trim.  The extravagant embroidery and metallic thread couching on these pieces feature very three-dimensional dragons, along with bats and flowers. These came from Tibet, via Mandalay in Burma. They are heavily smoked, and have considerable surface abrasion of the ground fabric, although most of the embroidery is in good condition. They are especially effective pieces when seen from a little distance.  $2200 pair.
