Soumak and Kilim Pillows |
| On the following pages you will find pillows made from antique tribal textile fragments -- bold slit-tapestry kilim (kelim) fabrics, intricate soumaks and lush brocades. Here's a sampling of the gallery selections. |
|
| Some of the colors are strong
and clear, others are muted. Kilim designs tend to be bold, soumak and brocade patterns
more intricate. All of the pillows are wool, but some of the most dramatic include white
cotton for contrast. Subtle variations (abrash) in the hand-dyed yarns enhance the
colors. Since I've not yet discovered a way to turn cheap, ugly kilim fragments into
beautiful pillows, I have hunted for the most wonderful old pieces I could find.
Unfortunately, as antique tribal flatweaves have become increasingly rare, good antique
"pillow makings" have also become hard to find. In quality, our pillows
are the equal of the kilims and bags elsewhere on the website, where you can see close-up
details. There are no "standard sizes" among these pillows. Each kilim or soumak fragment has been cut to display its design to best advantage. Prices are not always related to the pillow's size, as some of the smallest are jewels. Although many of the photos show two or more pillows together, they may all be purchased separately. Sometimes it is most effective to combine an intricate soumak pillow with a bolder, simpler kilim pattern in related colors. |
| Our selection of pillows is slim at the moment, simply because I have not had time to make more. To see those currently available, click on the pages below: |
