Temple Banner - Tung
Uttaradit. Central Thailand

Cotton and bamboo. 14"x 78½." Brocaded bands are separated with bamboo slats and rows of leno twists. This is a contemporary piece, in new condition. Such banners were used in association with Theravada Buddhist activities. They were used both inside and outside temples--to announce special occasions, to earn merit for a dead relative, or to symbolize wishes for a prosperous future.  They were also used for secular events.  $145
