MARLA MALLETT: TEXTILES

Tai Daeng Phaa Biang

Sam Neua area of Houa Phan, Laos
17½"x 88"
Silk brocade. Supplementary-weft weave (chok and khit).  This lovely old shoulder cloth has different patterning on the two ends, as was usual for old ritual shaman's healing cloths. This weaving is probably 40 to 60 years old and is in excellent condition.  The brocading is white, along with pale yellows, greens and black on a cherry-red ground. Birds form the major motifs.  HOLD
